The Get Unstuck Series - How To Live In The Present Moment

I’ve been getting this question a lot lately and I’m always struggling to do this myself so I thought it would be a great topic to talk about today.

Why is it so hard to keep yourself in the present moment?

If you're living in the past you're reliving old things that happened and this can show up as depression. When you're living in the future you're worrying and anxious about what’s to be, and this can show up as anxiety. You worry about something that hasn't happened yet. This is where I spend a lot of my time.

Being in the present moment is the only place where you can have peace and feel happy.

This is where your happy spot is.

You have complete control of how you want to respond to your present moment. You get to decide to just be happy.

The past is done and doesn’t exist anymore. Leave it there.

Your future has yet to be determined.

You can have a powerful effect on your future by how you decide to feel and be in your present.

So how do we keep our thoughts in this moment?

Here are a few suggestions:

  • Pay attention to when your thoughts go to the past or future. Just being aware is the first step. Then as soon as you notice this, bring yourself back to the present moment you're in by just naming objects and situations of your experience right in front of you. Something positive. Something you're grateful for. (My Puppies, coffee, food). Also a place I spend a lot of time:)
  • Put yourself In a flow state by doing things you love. You know those moments when you’re doing something and time either passes slow or fast. You are so focused on your present moment, your so focused on the task at hand, it’s like nothing else exists. This happens for me when I’m running, gardening, and working on creative projects.
  • Get outside in nature and appreciate its beauty. Pay attention to what's right in front of you and notice the beauty, the abundance, and perfection. Pay attention to your surroundings.
  • Be mindful and intentional when you're doing your daily actions. Eating, showering, exercising, what you spend your time on. Get out of auto pilot and be intentional with this time. Ask yourself, am I enjoying this? How can I enjoy it more? How can I spend more time on things that put me in that flow state?
  • Pay attention to the people you're with and be in the conversation. Really listen, don’t be thinking about how you will respond. People will feel how tuned in your are and the conversation and time you spend with them will be more meaningful.

"Breathe. Let go. And remind yourself that this very moment is the only one you know you have for sure" OPRAH WINFREY

These are a few ways to get started but if I had to sum it up into one thing, it would be to get out of auto pilot and be more intentional with your time and the way you do things in your life.

I hope this was helpful. Let me know if you tried any of these practices and how it’s worked out. I always love to hear from you so reach out on Instagram @tinastinsoncoach or email me at [email protected]
