Being Reasonable VS Dreaming Big

When we were little kids our parents read us beautiful stories about amazing things. We were encouraged to dream big, and use our imagination, the bigger the better, the more creative the better. As a matter of fact, I remember doing this on the daily, and living this way was complete bliss.

I had a whole dream world going on and in this world, I had complete control of how everything played out.

Well, believe it or not, this is really how our world works, we get what we have the courage to ask for and if you ask for small you will get small.

Then as we get older we are told to color in the lines, follow the rules, be quiet, respect authority, be reasonable, blah blah blah.

So which is it? It’s a bit confusing, right?

Well being reasonable never got anyone anywhere fabulous. I would argue that anyone who has any amazing experiences in their life had to have some big unreasonable dreams.

Is it reasonable for a person to think they will be a big movie star, a successful athlete, or a pop star? Yet it does happen, right?

So what is the difference between the person that gets there or does not get there?

I have to note, most people's big dreams do not involve being a star, I’m just using this as an example.

I believe that the first thing that has to happen is they have to allow themselves to dream big.

Which goes against what we are taught as we get older. Go to school, work hard, go to college, get married, have kids, and work hard for 80% of your life. Then, and only then, can you retire, maybe, and have some fun….WTF.

Sounds nuts when you say it out loud. Who’s crappy plan was this??

Dreaming Big is how all things start, with a thought and a feeling.

Then they have to tune everyone out. Everyone being, friends, family, society, everyone who tells them, “Now, be reasonable.”

They have to believe in themselves, they have to want the dream, and they have to know it will happen at some point which then leads them to never give up, to persevere.

I mean if you know it's going to happen, why would you ever give up? Because the journey you take on the way to the dream is the most fun.

You are learning things daily, making mistakes daily, making adjustments daily. But you are not giving up.

You connect with new people daily, and you move forward daily, even if it's tiny steps, it’s a step in a new direction.

So my question to you is why the heck would you ever NOT dream big?

I feel like there is just no other option.

Why would you be reasonable and boring about the experiences in your life unless you want them to be boring? Which maybe some people do. No judgment.

My brain just doesn’t have the capacity for boring, reasonable, and small.

Because as you work towards those BIG unreasonable dreams, you will have the most interesting fun experiences.

Sure, when you do this, you sometimes fail big. But, you will learn big lessons that in turn move you forward with huge leaps towards that amazing BIG dream.

That sounds like more fun to me.

How about you?
