How Your Nervous System Blocks Your Intuition + A Simple Fix

grounding intuition Jan 26, 2026
Hey there. Have you ever had that gut feeling you ignored, only to regret it later? Or felt so overwhelmed with ‘shoulds’ that you couldn’t hear your own inner voice?

For me, overwhelm was one of the biggest reasons I didn’t hear those tugs, those hits. As a single mom with three kids, I was always in a state of survival. And those two things, overwhelm and survival, are exactly what keep you disconnected from your intuition, from your Self.

Between career demands, family responsibilities, and societal expectations, our natural wisdom gets drowned out. We get bombarded with so much information every day. We have to be intentional about what we allow in, in order to protect our energy.

What if your intuition isn’t broken, it’s just waiting for the right conditions to speak clearly?

This was the case for me. Now, I create, very intentionally, the right conditions to connect and hear the signs. We all have access to them. We just need to slow down long enough to listen.

Your Body Before Your Wisdom: Why Regulation Comes First

Let’s talk science but keep it simple. Think of your nervous system like a built-in alarm system. You have two main modes:

  1. The "Gas Pedal" (Sympathetic Nervous System): This is fight-or-flight. It’s the stress, the anxiety, the "go-go-go" that kicks in when you feel threatened or overwhelmed.

  2. The "Brake" (Parasympathetic Nervous System): This is rest-and-digest. It’s the calm, the "pause," the state where your body can heal, and your mind can actually hear the quiet stuff.

When you’re in survival mode, stressed, anxious, distracted, like I was, your foot is slammed on the gas. Your intuition’s signal gets lost in the noise. It’s like a volume knob turned all the way to static (chaotic feelings, overwhelm) or all the way to mute (numbness, that “I just don’t know” feeling).

I believe we are so distracted we not only fail to hear it, but we also disconnect from our body’s inner wisdom. This isn’t an accident.

We’ve been conditioned by a patriarchal system to override that quiet inner voice. We’re taught to prioritize logic (often not even our own), seek external approval, and glorify the “hustle.” This disconnection is systemic. It serves a structure that values output over well-being. I don't know about you, but this system doesn't work for me, and I'm so done with it!

But here’s why this matters now more than ever: We are in a cultural moment of reclaiming feminine wisdom. Healing this connection isn’t just personal, it’s how we rebuild. The current patriarchal system is collapsing because it serves no one in the end. We are learning to create from a place of collaboration, care, and true inner knowing.

The 90-Second Reset: A Grounding Practice for Instant Clarity

So, how do you turn down the static? You hit the brake. Just for a moment. This isn’t about finding the answer immediately; it’s about creating the quiet where the answer can land.

Try this with me now:

  1. Pause & Plant: Feel your feet flat on the floor. Name three things you can physically touch, the fabric of your chair, the smooth desk, the floor beneath you.

  2. Breathe & Listen: Take three deep breaths. Make the exhale longer than the inhale. Then, listen for the quietest sound you can hear in the room right now.

  3. Check-In: Place a hand on your heart or your abdomen. Ask softly, “What do I know right now?” Don’t look for a story or a sentence. Notice the first physical sensation, a tightening, a release, a warmth, a pull.

  4. Listen & Honor: Then, respond by honoring what you need in that moment. A glass of water? To close your eyes? To say “no” to the next request?

  5. Create Space: Finish with a few minutes of deep breath: in through your nose, and an extended, releasing exhale through your mouth. Just create a moment of space. Rest. Calm.

This works because it actively shifts your nervous system out of panic mode. It creates a gap between the stimulus (the stress) and your reaction. In that gap, the subtle signal of your intuition can finally be heard over the noise of anxiety. Over time this practice will become so natural for you, almost automatic. This is when you'll feel tuned in. It never feels perfect for me but I can tell in my body when I need to be more intentional about protecting my energy.

From Overwhelm to Obvious: A Story of Intuition Regained

I spent a decade making decisions from a place of survival and pure reaction. I didn’t pause to connect with my body or take the time I needed. And here’s something every person needs to hear: You are allowed to take time and space to decide how to respond. Never, ever respond from a reactive state until you’ve done the grounding practice. I did this for so long I had a stroke at 39 from the dysregulation in my body. If you don't take the time to care for yourself, your body will create this time for you. In my case it was a whole year.

I learned this the hard way. The pivot came when I started using this technique not to get an answer, but simply to find calm.

In the quiet that followed, the answer was never a loud, ranting voice. True intuition is quiet, short, and solid. (If what you hear is a continuous, run-on sentence of worry… that’s not your intuition talking). For me, it became a deep, bodily sense of “yes”, a feeling of expansion, in my gut, not fear. The logic to support the decision always came after the knowing. Pay attention to how your body communicates with you. A yes might be felt in your chest or heart. This is a process of forming a relationship with yourself. It helps you build trust, confidence, and empowerment.

The moral? The intuition was always there. The chaos wasn’t a lack of answers, it was a dysregulated system trying to solve a problem from a place of fear.

Why Your Clear Intuition is a Revolutionary Act

This practice is more than self-care. It’s a reclamation.

  1. It’s the Power of Discernment Over Compliance: Clear intuition helps you discern your true “yes” and “no.” It breaks the cycles of overgiving and burnout that the patriarchal system modeled for us.

  2. It’s Leading from Wholeness: Decisions made from a regulated, intuitive place consider community, sustainability, and long-term well-being. These are the hallmarks of matriarchal values, values that nurture life. Values we need desperately right now.

  3. It’s Creating New Systems: When we trust our inner wisdom, we stop asking for permission. We build the businesses, relationships, and communities that honor our cyclical nature, our empathy, our collaborative power. We don’t just enter old systems; we birth new ones.

Where to Go From Here: Deepening Your Practice in Community

While one technique is powerful, sustained change, the kind that rewires a lifetime of conditioning, often happens in community. With guidance, and with the support of women on the same path.

I’ll soon be sharing a way for all women to create a support system of like-minded woman who want to live from an aligned, confident, and supportive feminine place, within their own unique purpose. Stay tuned for that.
