Drink – Drink at least 16 oz of water right when you get up. I keep a glass of water on my nightstand so I don't even have to get out of bed. By doing this you get your metabolism to fire up, flush out toxins from your body, and re-hydrate. After all, you just went 8 hrs without fluid so your dehydrated. Your brain is made up of 75% water so it works better with some water added, otherwise you can feel fatigued and foggy.
Be Grateful – Always Start the day by acknowledging all the things you are grateful for in your life. Don't forget the small things, like a fantastic cup of coffee or maybe a phone call from a friend. When the first thing you do is remind yourself of how lucky you are, more of that will follow. What you focus on expands.
Journal - I use my journal to write down what I am grateful for every day. I also use it as a dumping ground. Whatever is on my mind will be written down. Things I'm grateful for or excited about. Things I'm worried about and possible solutions. The solution thing is key, It helps you feel empowered and puts your thinking on the right path of resolutions and no worries. Then I'll commit to doing one fun thing every day, one active thing, and a couple of my main goals. I'll think about possible roadblocks and solutions beforehand so nothing will stop me from completing them. There are times when I just have one bigger goal, but then there are also times when I'll have 5 small goals.
Move – Working out first thing in the morning has many benefits. It will get your metabolism going. So when you get to work and possibly sitting still your burning calories. Bonus! It makes us happier and improves your brain function. I don't know about you but I love my endorphins in the morning. Also, when we exercise it sparks the growth of new nerve cells and new blood vessels in the brain. This increases brain-tissue volume, something that usually decreases with age. Regular exercise increases the volume of your hippocampus, the region responsible for memory and learning. It also feels great to exercise first thing. You feel accomplished before you even start your day. I know there are times when it's just not going to happen first thing. Don't stress about it, just get it in later or start fresh the next day.
Doing these things in the morning doesn't take a lot of time but will make a huge difference in your everyday life. So make the time to take care of yourself. Your older, smarter, happier self will thank you in the future!
